ECSEL-Austria

Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership. ECSEL-Austria, the Austrian technology platform for industry, research and development in the field of micro-nanoelectronics, embedded systems and electronic system integration

In Austria, ECSEL-Austria coined the term "Electronicbased Systems (EBS)" because it describes the electronic components and assemblies as well as the associated software, up to the pre-product. EBS are used (in a special form) in all six key technologies.

Goals / Mission / Strategy

Secure supply of key technologies and critical know-how in the field of electronic components and system solutions to support innovation in all major sectors of Europe's economy and society.

Objectives

  • Strengthening Austrian companies and research institutions in their competitiveness in the EEBS (Electronic-based Systems) ecosystem.
  • Strengthening the competitiveness of Austrian actors by encouraging participation in European project cooperation.
  • Thematic leadership for European and Austrian research programmes to strengthen research and development in the EES sector.
  • Strengthening the visibility of leading technologies of Austrian partners in research, development and production in the European EBS ecosystem.
  • Actors in the Austrian EBS ecosystem are seen as a preferred partner in large, collaborative research projects.

Areas of work / Topics

ECSEL-Austria supports

  1. Austrian EBS actors in formulating common positions in research and innovation.
  2. the Federal Government in the identification of national and transnational research priorities in the EBS area.
  3. the ECSEL JU (Joint Undertaking) in the content programming.
  4. Austrian industry and research in the conception of complex research projects as well as networking.

International Cooperation

ECSEL is set up as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) by the EU with the aim of promoting large, collaborative European research and innovation projects. The leading position in electronic components and systems is crucial for European research and industry, because these key technologies secure high-quality jobs and are crucial for a functioning economy and prosperity in Europe.

In this PPP model, project costs are co-financed by the EU and 30 Member States, as well as by participating organisations such as companies and research institutions 50/50.

The European network is also implemented through cooperation with sister platforms in Italy, Sweden, France, Belgium, Germany and Spain as well as via the European platforms ARTEMIS, ENIAC-Aeneas and EPoSS.

Success Stories / Lead Projects

PowerBase

With the help of the PowerBase project, power semiconductor pilot lines for wafer production and chip packaging with a focus on compact power applications are being built and further developed. Demonstrators and holistic experiments are an essential building block in the PowerBase project, thereby strengthening Europe's capacity for innovation through the development of technologies specifically aimed at energy-efficient systems.

The innovative performance components are designed to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability in energy production, transmission and use at a reasonable price.

The PowerBase project targets both the silicon path and the wide bandgap path, enabling great progress in the More-than-Moore area and system-in-package.

Effect and long-term benefits

The PowerBase project focuses on the value chain in Europe, maintaining Europe's leading position in technology development and technology deployment. In the sense of "Innovation Action", the focus is on exploiting the results of the project, i.e. closing the gap between research and commercial exploitation.

Power semiconductors are key factors for the ability to innovate, which is a major and large European industry, boosting economic growth and creating exciting new jobs for citizens.

As a critical intersection between data processing and harsh, real-world environments, power semiconductors support the development of solutions to some of the most challenging societal challenges posed by European policy for 2020 and also be addressed.

For these reasons, it is extremely important that further investment should be made in this area in order to ensure European cooperation and access to technologies, know-how and skills, and to ensure Europe's growth potential and strategic independence in the face of competition and increasing globalisation.

ENABLE-S3

The aim of ENABLE-S3 is to significantly increase the reliability of automated systems and to reduce the effort and costs for testing. This goal is achieved through a comprehensive modular verification and validation framework (V&V).

Methods and building blocks will be developed to meet the required experimental effort in the automotive, aerospace and shipping industries, on the one hand, and agriculture, rail, rail and health. on the other hand. Cross-industry use of these methods and building blocks and the exchange of knowledge to them will be promoted.

Effect and long-term benefits

In Europe

Automated cyber-physical systems (ACPS) have the potential to change society with all their opportunities and risks. Transferring part of the decision to machine systems such as ACPS increases people's safety and productivity by freeing them from routine activities.

It also ensures accessibility to all social classes and sectors, such as older age groups and rural areas. ENABLE-S3 will expose important, missing building blocks such as V&V technologies that are needed to cost-effectively ensure the reliability and security of ACPS.

As a result, European companies will take a global lead in the competitive field of automated systems.

In Austria

ENABLE-S3 secures the leadership position of Austrian partners in the field of automated systems, such as autonomous driving. Four out of five shareholders of the Styrian test centre ALP. For example, Lab are ENABLE-S3 project partners. The technological building blocks developed in this project are developed by ALP. lab.
